User rights update
Due to massive amounts of work I haven’t been able to update user rights before now - so everyone earlier have requested rights to upload themes, you should be able to now.

Agree with “that girl again”. Wordpress has a very strong brand and everybody is happy with the effort but that’s right that the subdomain name themes.wordpress.net doesn’t meet the same level of expectation than people used to get with the official Wordpress.
It may be possible that themes.wordpress.net will have a negative impact on the good Wordpress brand, just because it’s hosted under a sub-domain of wordpress and it’s labelled as an offial theme viewer.
It makes sense that one day or another someone or a group complains about something that doesn’t work well. It’s not bad, it’s just a right to complain and not to stay mute. Sometimes, it’s better to point out something that doesn’t work to make people aware of what doesn’t work. If nobody complain, I believe people will think all is perfect.
I also think Mr. Free But Active has certainly reached a certain level of frustration that pushed him (or them) to think about a real alternative.
May be he (or they) have certainly tried to contact the admin of themes.wordpress.net but they haven’t certainly got any reply or answers. I had the same experience when contacting the Admin and I never had any answers to my little question that I’ve sent since some weeks…
Yes, I confirm that the admin of themes.wordpress.net is certainly so busy and it has apparently some real consequences on the Wordpress brand and other people who are certainly also frustrated and even myself at my little level.
I just hope all will be fine and that the owner of Wordpress.org and Wordpress.net is more wise and will just find a replacement for the current Admin of themes.wordpress.net before there’re something more disturbing or that will give a bad reputation to Wordpress itself?
Your thoughts?

Reply to Joni Mueller:
I think the complain is OK and it makes sense. I also don’t think there’re something hard in the tone. It’s quite adequate for the context.
General statement:
I tend to take the camp of people who wants to make things moving, and I really think all of us should do the same as in life it’s the only thing that can make things better.
Anyway, I’m sure all will be smooth soon.

I think the point that is missed that jonimueller touched on is that even despite this site’s apparent problems now, it still has a great many wonderful themes to choose from and they are all well displayed, the site is easy to navigate and the themes are easy to find. In other words, let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. :0)

I have had a rough time lately, not being able to focus at running the site optimately, resulting in:
- screenshotting server has been down
- 350 unread emails from this site (3 weeks mails)
- unsatisfied usersWhat i think isnt fair is:
- The whole reason i have to give people upload rights is that some users cant handle immidiate uploading rights and starts spamming.
- I run a free site, ad-free, for the WordPress community, and have put many hours into coding it and maintaining it - the reason i use a wp.net domain isnt to get free hosting, i could manage that without. I am not paid to run this, even though its a “semi-official” ressource site.I will handle user uploading rights and screenshots asap, and then i might look around for someone to continue the site after me.

Thomas - this site is a phenomenal resource to WP users everywhere. I think most reasonable folks understand that this is a free site - life does intrude and technology is not always perfect. I know I am pleased that the wp themes site exists… aside from uploading my own themes for community use, I have several hosting clients of mine who benefit greatly from this site. Considering the great resource this site is . . . and the utter size of the WP community (not too mention the free use of themes and the donation of your time) - a few burps in the system are to be expected and understood.
Hoping you and your family had wonderful (and safe) holidays.

(sorry, my english is verry verry bad…)
Again, sorry for the dutch text!!
I hope someone can and will translate it… :SThank you verry much for this great website!

Here Eriks translated post:
This is a fantastic website! where beautiful themes FREE OF CHARGE to get are. Also is this a beautiful gesture, with which I mean, that it men its that free of charge a theme offer in which they a lot of time stuck! You thank!
When a website gets more acquaintance, increases the number spammers also, logically! That here something against done becomes is correct! Thus men, if you must wait on your users straighten… the they so! Place then in a reply your link, which you your theme (’ s) offered, so that men for instance on your website look at the through you made theme…
I get not about which these persons their frustrations do not translate into acts, start then self a similar website and experience self how it is round so website and comment and email to maintain, certain as for it not paid becomes!

@The Undersigned:
This site is such an amazing place for everyone in the Wordpress community to find most things they need. You do a great job, but if you do decide to hand it over to someone else, thanks for all you’ve done. I wouldn’t mind helping out whoever takes over this place.

Yes, and it’s nice to have the thumbnails back as well. Thanks, Thomas, for all your hard work. Whether the site continues to grow and expand, or whether it just sits here exactly like this for the rest of time, it will always continue to be a wonderful resources for great themes and a showcase for design talent (and in my case, a great learning experience).

[...] Take something like the WordPress Theme Viewer. I choose this as a starting point because it is something I was heavily involved in for quite some time and I can relate to much of the input from both the users and the current site maintainer. Reading through the comments on this thread, it soon becomes apparent that many people are impatient, expect a lot for free, and believe they have the right to complain if the service provided does not operate to their complete satisfaction. And this is not just for the Theme Viewer. It applies to thousands of situations across the Net. [...]

there are so many themes submitted to the theme viewer. and they are php-based. i know that phpBB has a team that checks styles before making them available. i guess the themeviewer hasn’t been hacked yet, so most of the people submitting themes must be coding them securely.

@ Billy — nobody bothers checking the comments here, try emailing the admin at silkjaer@theundersigned.net. If that gets no result contact the domain owner (m@mullenweg.com) and ask him to find somebody else to run the site
Comment by that girl again — December 21, 22:49
You can post wordpress themes on http://themebot.com, which is actively maintained. A gallery entry and live demo will be created for any new theme and users who subscribe to the WordPress downloads section via RSS will be notified when you post a new theme or update an existing theme.
Comment by Sean — December 23, 17:48
Thanks, Sean. I’ll head over there. I’ve got some themes here that I can’t access to update and about 15 more free themes that I cannot upload.
I know it’s the holidays and all and that the owner of this site has a life (as do we all).. So hopefully I’ll hear from him after the first of the year with login info.
Comment by Joni Mueller — December 24, 16:56
I already asked my access since more than 2 weeks and still no access or not info about that topic.
So I just come here to check every day and to always see that the person who is supposed to maintain this web site has not yet done it.
Apparently, the guy can’t maintain it actively. Either his excuse is an overload of work to do or either something else to come like I guess holidays etc. The results is the same, a decrease of quality of services and more important a decrease of trust and a feeling of having no choice for the user. The worst is that there is no established policy, and the user just doesn’t know how long he has to wait.
What is sure is that’s something is wrong somehow because it generates some frustrations for a lot of people, and users also lose some time to come to check on a daily basis if the accesses were given or not. I and other users are not there to get frustrated and lose time like that.
I believe themes.wordpress.net was a very good idea but it’s clearly a failure in term of maintenance and activity at the level of the one who maintains the site. The right updates just takes weeks.
All that even forces some of the users to switch to other places and even to think to do another open source Wordpress themes viewer initiative that will be more actively maintained and by more than one unique person, and so it avoid the unique person to be the bottleneck, the point of failure.
I can just say and I’m not wrong that Mr. “The Undersigned” is the point of failure of themes.wordpress.net. Sorry to tell that but if Mr. “The Undersigned” is too busy and if he has a bit of considerations of the users, he could delegated the maintenance activities to other people who will do much better. There’re other people who can do as well and sure better than Mr. “The Undersigned”, he’s not the unique one that can handle it.
For me and I know other people share my thoughts, the free initiative doesn’t mean crapy services. If it’s the case, free open source movement would fail since the beginning.
There themes.wordpress.net is just a failure and if things continue like that with a so low quality of services, I and other people will just launch our own initiative that will be the same kind of services but under another domain name and maintained by more active people, with more respects for the end users.
Let’s wait and see for 1 more things how things go and if there’s no reaction and changes from Mr. “The Undersigned”, we’ll launch a kind of competition to themes.wordpress.net. It’s the only way to wake up people and we’ll ensure we’ll use our right to compete as competition make things better for the end users in the end.

Comment by free_but_active — December 27, 13:39
We’re a group a tech activitist and think that free open source can be better managed than that.
If themes.wordpress.net fails to react and increase the maintenance aspect, sure our tech group will just launch a competitive initiative as it will be the only viable way to make the world better and give better end user experiences.
Mr. Free But Active

Comment by free_but_active — December 27, 13:56
I think that’s a bit harsh. I mean, we are talking about THEMES. For BLOGS. FREE. And yes, we have all invested our time, our creative energy and our enthusiasm to these themes, and this site’s owner has done the same thing with this site.
Life intervenes. The problem seems to be with the screen shots which individual users, for the sake of consistency of appearance, are NOT able to upload on their own.
I got in by just going to the “Forgot Password?” screen, and having the system mail me a new one, then I was in and good to go.
As I said, the only hurdle then becomes the fact that there are no screenshots/thumbnails on the more recently posted themes. But you do have the “Test Run” link so the site is not completely functionless and in fact still remains a rich resource.
Let’s not bite the hand that feeds us and you should always have your themes in more than one place, your own web site, and other theme repositories. I just think backbiting and villification serves no purpose. Just look how many themes are here. They didn’t miracle themselves here. Someone had to pay for hosting, for bandwidth, to create user accounts, to manage the files, the design, etc. All for free and on his own time. You aren’t paying for a thing, and you’ve lost nothing and I think it says a lot about someone’s priorities if this is what they find to complain about.
I’ve uploaded my themes here, through my own ingenuity. You can do likewise. Or not.
Peace out.
Comment by Joni Mueller — December 27, 21:47
The whole reason this site is on a subdomain of wordpress.net is so that the site admin doesn’t have to meet hosting and bandwidth costs out of his own pocket. If this were still an independent effort I think people would be willing to cut him a lot more slack, but since this site is a semi-official resource whose running costs are being met by Automattic, I don’t think it’s unreasonable for the community to expect a certain level of commitment.
If the current admin’s not capable of maintaining the site by himself, he needs to be honest about the problem and get some more people on board. I wonder whether the people setting up alternative sites have emailed him with offers of help?
Comment by that girl again — December 28, 2:22
