marco, to be honest, I always thought they were sorted according to the menu order, never realized they weren’t.
in sidebar.php, replace the line with the wp_list_pages() call with the following:
<?php wp_list_pages(array(’title_li’ => ‘<h2>’. __(’Pages’,'mandigo’) .’</h2>’,’sort_column’ => ‘menu_order’)); ?>This change will be included in the next release, thanks for pointing it out!

I am not able to get mint (version 2.04) to work with your theme.
I have mint installed at http://mydomain.com/mint and the mint plugin installed. On the Mint Options page there is a test (see below). When I run the test for both header and footer and I do NOT get redirected to the stats page.
It is recommended to have the Mint script in the header and you should only choose body if you are experiencing problems.
Note: Header uses the wp_head() function to insert the script and Body uses wp_footer(), if your WordPress theme does not call either of these functions then this plug-in will not work.
View/Test Mint
After you have updated the path above, click the button below to be redirected to your Mint stats page. If you do not get redirected successfully then the path configured above is incorrect.
Any assistance is appreciated.

Ciao Tom, thanks for your answer.
I have change the sidebar.php but It does not work.
I tried the “ShiftThis Order Pages” plugin that I used in others website, but It works only in the header.
The problem is that I have more then 20 pages to put in order and I can not leave them in the header.Can you help me?

Tom, perhaps in the next release you can have an option to NOT hide the sidebar when viewing archives or trying to post a comment. I would much rather have the sidebar viewable at all times. Thanks.

1.14
+ added an option to use background patterns
+ added an option to set header navigation alignment
+ added an option to show sidebars even in single.php
+ language: Greek (el)
+ language: Icelandic (is_IS)
+ language: Maltese (mt_MT)
* fixed the (lastminute) css warning in the header
* pages in sidebar are now sorted according to menu_orderComment by t0mmmmmmm — March 15, 23:20

cd1940, the text you posted states that “If you do not get redirected successfully then the path configured above is incorrect.”, so my recommandation is to double check your paths. Pretty URLs often tend to make things a little harder too.
marco and Frostfox, check out 1.14!

Ciao Tom,
I deleted the old version and I tried with the new version of Mandigo. I’m sorry, but I can change the pages order only in the header. In the sidebar It seems to works in alphabetical order.
It’s really clear if you have a look to http://www.ipsar.it
you can see the page order in brackets.
Is that right?
Thank you very much for your work.Comment by marco — March 16, 1:36

marco, for some reason, page order numbers have to be consecutive for pages to be sorted properly.

In case you do not feel like changing your page indexes, and until the wp_list_pages() is fixed, here’s a workaround:
<?php wp_list_pages(’title_li=<h2>’. __(’Pages’,'mandigo’) .’</h2>&sort_column=menu_order’); ?>

I’m sorry Tom, but I tried with Page 1,2,3,4 and 5, but nothing change. I know that WP is not a really CMS. Please let me know if and when you update your beautifull template. I will use Mandigo for other projects.

Tom, the problem is the widgets plugin. Without the widgets plugin it’s working now. I think I can use it without widgets.
I have to correct the sidebar files manually, like usually.

Hi Tom!
I’ve downloaded Mandigo and I love it. I haven’t put it online yet because when I add stuff to sidebar it pushes it all together and the content goes down.
Also, can you tell me the simplest way to make the content area slightly larger and reduce the sidebars a bit?
You’re the man!

When I tried the 3 column option, it worked fine in Firefox, but in I.E., the columns were pushed to the right. The head image was in the right place, but everything else was shifted to the right.

There are some troubles in IE7. Last page crops up the remaining posts, the sidebar creeps to the left on all pages.

marco, sorry you couldn’t get it to work after so long. I have included the change from #167 in Mandigo, we’ll see if it fixes it (it does for me).
Zoner and Bob, I have made changes to the stylesheets which could solve the sidebars problems.
Getting the theme to look the same in so many browsers has become kind of tricky because of the layout options. Widgets often cause problems too because they sometimes come with their own css.
Frostfox, thanks for the suggestion, will try to.

Found a slight bug with the new version. When you click on a post and have the option for sidebar turned on, it breaks the page a little. I took a screen shot of it, so you can see what I mean.
http://www.frostfox.com/blogpics/themeproblem.jpgLooks like the page isn’t extending to allow for the sidebar to finish. So it overlaps over the footer.

Hi Tom,
Your theme is very nice indeed. I’m using WP 2.1.2 with Mandigo 1.14 and Sidebar Widgets. I turned on the sidebars on single.php.
But it seems that everytime I put the Recent Posts widget on one of the sidebars, the previous_post_link and next_post_link do not work correctly. Instead of displaying the real previous / next post, it displays the same previous / next posts on all my single post pages.
Any idea how to fix this? At the moment I just stop using the Recent Posts widget.
Thanks.

Hey Tom:
I wonder if you have a minute to help me out. I came upon your theme this morning and I love it! Not only does it look great, but all of the information you built in that’s available in the wp-admin is very helpful. So thanks.
That said, I’ve been scouring the web and the codex and everything for the last couple of hours in an attempt to find out how to have a different custom header image at the top of each page on my site (not randomized, just different). Is this possible?
Thanks! ~ MB

Oh, silly me, I think it’s fixed.
Instead of
em {
font-style: normal;
font-weight: bold;

jorge, this is the first time I hear of such an issue. I doubt it’s directly related to the theme.
Poedhz, it works fine for me, so this could be a bug with the widget. Have you tried updating the widgets plugin?

kaboomer, here is a not-so-complicated way to do it:
create your header images and name them after the ID of the pages (eg 121.jpg for page #121). Put them in the images/ subfolder. Add the following to header.php, before the closing </head> tag:
<?php
if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); endwhile; endif;
if (file_exists(TEMPLATEPATH.’/images/’.get_the_ID().’.jpg’)):
?>
<style type=”text/css”>
#headerimg {
background: url(<?=get_bloginfo(’stylesheet_directory’)?>/images/<?=get_the_ID()?>.jpg) bottom center no-repeat;
}
</style>
<?php endif; ?>Neo_Player, the EM tag behaviour is intentional as I think bold EMphasizes better than italics, and it is still possible to use <i>

I have a problem with the theme. It seems that there is something wrong with the alignment on my different pages. Before the last update (1.14) I had the problem on the blogpage aswell. But since updating the problem remains on the pages. If you visit my site you´ll se what I mean. The main content is a couple of pixels higher than the sidebar…
Hope you can help…

Tom,
Possible that it’s still short tags?
Another thing: I have added prev-next links at the bottom and at the top, because sometimes a page is quite long and then it’s a pain if you have to scroll up again…or down…
You can take a look at http://www.topsoft.be/photoblog
Only thing that still bothers me is that I can not get rid of the long descriptions on the single page (instead of next/previous, it shows the title, which sometimes is too long to be good, instead of next and previous.. I know it’s not part of your theme, so perhaps you can not help me there…Comment by Ludo rubben — April 4, 18:37

Tom,
I see that you have seen what I shout out, so sorry for the repetition: A truly beautiful, awesome, fantastic and outstanding template! Thank you.
Mandigo has almost everything I was looking for to replace the theme (Andreas WP-Andreas 09) I currently use. The only thing I miss is Andreas 09’s fantastic feature to add child page buttons to the header as one digs down into the childs (see my site linked behind my name below). I tried changing the wp_list_pages items from &depth=1 to &depth=2 in header.php, but that did no good. Unfortunaley I am not a good enough coder to figure out how to program what I need (wish for). Perhaps anyone else have the same need (well, wish) as I do?
Otherwise I think I just will have to rethink the structure of my site and go for Mandigo anyway.
Cheers,

a brief update. I switched to Mandigo at http://www.weconverse.com and did a manual half fix for my page navigation needs. Also found out that Andreas (or the WP-porter Anslie) used the plug-in WP-PagesNav (http://wp.sieker.info/projects/wp-pagesnav). Or rather included the codings in the WP-Andreas09 template. Tried to install the plugin with Mandigo, but I did not figure out how it should be done. Posted a Q to the developer. Will see what happens…

ludo, I’m not sure why but the short tags were still there. They will be gone in 1.16, merci! To use preset text instead of post title in navigation, edit single.php and change <?php previous_post_link(’« %link’) ?> to <?php previous_post_link(’« %link’,'PREVIOUS or something’) ?>. The second parameter to the previous_post_link function is the link name.
Richard, level 2 pages and beyond are hidden from the header navigation. In style.css.php, look for the “.pages ul” selector and remove the “display: none;” property (or remove the selector completely). Subpages navigation has been on my todo list for a long time, so I’ll try and get it working for 1.16.
Ben, colors are set in style.css.php. To change the blog title color, edit the color property for the h1 selector:
h1, h1 a, h1 a:hover, h1 a:visited, #headerimg .description {
text-decoration: none;
color: white;
}Comment by t0mmmmmmm — April 7, 16:19
-
Tomm,
Thanks a lot, you solved my problem…didn’t know it took 2 parameters…
Tom, is there a possibility to have a changelog sometime in the future? I have a script in place that puts my modified PHP files over an update, so that I don’t have to edit all these files again and again…(I have 5 blogs with your theme and 6 modified PHP files in your theme…that makes 30 modifications I would have to apply after each update…). Problem is that if I apply an update now and run my script, I risk to replace any modif YOU have applied with an old version…
Sorry if that causes much more work for you…

Hi Tom,
Just installed Mandigo 1.6, and Adsense Deluxe plugin. Rnnning WP 2.1.3
I am trying to add a small adsense box into every post displayed in the main page, by embedding the code using the theme editor.
the code above is the one I am trying to place in the index file, in the loop generating the posts.
Where and how should I place the code? I tried putting it in numerous places after the

but it just keeps giving me errors.
I have searched the Wordpress.org forums, found some solutions but those didn’t work too. Here are the ones I have looked at.

Mandingo continues to rule - I’ve been basing my site on it, and it’s almost ready for release.
I have a question for you about sidebars. I’m using the wide version of the theme, and on most pages I’m only using one sidebar. However, on one page, I’d like to have a left sidebar, the center content area, and a right sidebar.
Is it possible to set it up so that only one page uses both sidebars?
Thanks, and thanks again for your previous help.

Hi t0mmmmmmm… I love your theme, and while customizing it for my upcoming new blog, I noticed that the next and previous posts links on single pages don’t work properly (you can see it here: all the posts have only one next/previous post link, which is always the same, proves d’estil). I first thought that I may have broken something while editing the files… but I just downloaded the new version, and without editing anything, there’s still the same bug.
I don’t know if it’s a theme bug or not, because I’ve seen some blogs using your theme and they seem ok… On the other hand, I’ve tried other themes that also display the next/previous posts links and they display correctly.
Can you provide any help? Thanks!

Hi again,
I think I found the problem. I disabled all my plugins and then tried again (I’ve deleted my previous test posts so the above links won’t work), and the links display correctly.
Then I activated the widgets plugin and it won’t work anymore. So I think that although the theme is compatible with widgets, I mean I can add widgets to up to four sidebars, somehow it has some incompatibility.
Anyway, I don’t need widgets

Thien, pasting HTML in comments is tricky. Mind starting this discussion over via email? Please use the email address from the README file.
PhoenixDth, in style.css.php, look for the “.entry img.wp-smiley” selector and change the background property value from inherit to transparent. I have included this change in 1.17. Thanks!
kaboomer, implementing such a behaviour requires a lot of modifications. The easiest way (and it’s not really easy) is to create a new template file and hack your way (CSS and PHP) to the desired layout. I have had a similar request from another user but it was little easier since he wanted to use the 3-column layout site-wide except on one page. Still, he did have to create a new php file. I will try try and think of a user-friendly solution to this. In the meantime, good luck!
Lady Madonna, I’ve had other reports of this issue. It seems to affect a low percentage of Mandigo users and I’m not of them, so it is difficult for me to track the bug and fix it. Could you please send an email (pick the address from the README) with the versions numbers for WP, PHP, MySQL and the widgets plugin? TIA!

Hi Tom,
I managed to get adsense working on my site now. Thanks.
Have another problem now. I am trying to have a different header image for different pages of my blog.
I read that you have put up a solution for kaboomer in post #195, but can’t get it working.
I have placed the images I want in the images/ folder. I paste the code you posted in #195 into the header.php
Is there anything else I need to do? When you stated ID…does it refer to the Page Slug when editing the page? And do I have to insert anything for the “TEMPLATE” in your code in #195?
Thanks for all the great support you have given!
Comment by Thien — April 26, 8:34

Sorry,
not “TEMPLATE” I meant “TEMPLATEPATH”. Do I have come up with my own page template and insert it into the “TEMPLATEPATH” portion?
If so, how do I do that?
Comment by Thien — April 26, 8:37
-
Thien,
Name your image files after pages ID, not slug. You can retrieve these values in the administration interface under Manage, Pages. TEMPLATEPATH is a WP variable that corresponds to the *local* path of your mandigo folder, so you need not change it.
Hope this helps!
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — April 26, 12:29

Thanks for the explanation Tom, now I roughly understand what your code is doing…YOU’re a genius.
Still can’t get the pages to load the custom header images. Here’s what I got at the top of the standard Mandigo header image.
Warning: Division by zero in /home/****/public_html/MYSITEURL/wp-content/themes/mandigo-14/header.php on line 41
Warning: Division by zero in /home/****/public_html/MYSITEURL/wp-content/themes/mandigo-14/header.php on line 41
I figured that it may be something to do with me using static pages, so I tried disabling the static pages at Options->Reading.
Now another weird thing happened…the blog still list http://www.url.com/staticpage when I view the blog. Can’t get it back to the standard blog where it lists the posts instead of pages.
I’m using Mandigo 1.6 and Wordpress 2.1.3.
Maybe you changed something in Mandigo? The solution you posted at post #195 is before v1.6 is released.

Just installed Mandigo 1.16 in Wordpress 2.1.3. Love it! It looks awesome in Firefox. But apparently in IE the 2nd sidebar keeps showing up and splitting my page up. I saw some references to IE in the comments but nothing substantial as to an answer/solution.
Here’s a screenshot: http://casadeblundell.com/screenshot.jpg
Any help would be appreciated. I had someone trying to get me to change it over and over again and I had no idea what they were talking about until I looked at it in IE.

This theme looks really neat. I especially love the logo. It’s a cool way to show the date of a post, too.

Hi,
I’ve updated Mandigo today. Here’s the list of changes, taken from the README file:
1.5
+ added the purple color scheme
+ added an option to change the date format
+ added an option to display a translucent black stripe over the header image for better readability
* fixed some alignment issues in IE7

* fine-tuned max-width for images in posts

Thanks for your excellent Mandigo-theme. I just started using it for a website I made for a dj-collective in Dordrecht, The Netherlands. I love the colours and the amount of space that the theme gives.
So far the reactions on the site (which mainly means the theme, since most people don’t look much further than the outside and the first emotional impression) were splendid, so you did an overall great job. Thanks for that.
Comment by Inge — January 17, 9:15
I’m trying it out in blue, changed the picture only because it has been downloaded a lot and that picture will be around, it is lovely to look at. I give it a 5.
I am curious as to how to change the code so only three of my pages show up at the top. I’ve changed top links only when they are listed as links this but these links are via “php pages” and I don’t know how to get it to only do three of the pages.
Thank you for all the hard work.
Comment by cooper — January 18, 5:05
Several things, I cannot italicize any of the text (the italicized text comes out bold instead). Also, not sure if this is due to the theme or my lack of programming skills, but whenever I insert a picture, I cannot skip a line or insert a “”. Otherwise, FANTASTIC WORK! You’ve definitely made things easier for me…
Comment by Dave — January 20, 10:17
Hi,
cooper: it is actually possible to prevent some pages from showing up in the pages list. Edit header.php and look for the wp_list_pages() function at the bottom of the file then modify it to exclude pages as per instructions from the codex: http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/wp_list_pages#Exclude_Pages_from_List
Since it would make a nice addition to the theme, I will probably add an option to do that from the theme options page in the next update.
Dave: in wp, italicizing is achieved by using the EM tag and in Mandigo, this tag is styled to display as bold text. I didn’t pay attention things were this way, so I will probably add another option to let people style EM as italics or bold. In the meantime, you can edit the post in html mode and change EM into I tags.
As for your image issue, edit the post in html mode and add style=”float: none;” to your IMG tag.
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions!

Mandigo does work with WordPress 2.1, so it’s probably your WordPress installation that is faulty.

Hi !
I really like the theme and have started using it. I have a question though.
I would like to be able to sort the pages in the menu according to how I´ve sorted them in the wordpress admin panel. Right now they are sorted in alphabetical order by default. Can someone give me some pointers as to how I can do this…

Bravo Tom, superbe boulot.
Je t’envoie une version traduite de ton thème dans la journée et après je le porte sur mon site, après avoir modifié deux ou trois détails.
Encore bravo
Comment by Michel — January 25, 14:29
Hi there,
Mats, to display pages according to your menu order, open header.php and look for the wp_list_pages() function at the very bottom of the file and add sort_column=menu_order& before depth=1 so that it becomes sort_column=menu_order&depth=1…
I have not tested it but that surely will do the trick.
This should be a default so I will include the change in the next update.
Michel, Mandigo will probably become localizable in a near future so this is one less translation to do, merci!
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — January 25, 15:03

That did the trick… Like I said… Really a nice theme…

Indeed - very fine and easy to implement. Even if you only think you know what you’re doing.
Comment by I.A.M. — January 26, 4:04
Just figured how to change the categories area in sidebar. In sidebar.php change parameter to wp_list_cats ‘hide_empty=1′ . this will keep empty categories from being listed in the sidebar. I did notice that “wp_list_cats” has been deprecated in 2.1 (replaced by wp_list_categories) but substituting this newer call in sidebar didn’t work. It probably needs replacement elsewhere.
I would like to change the general blog background color. Thinking it is probably a change in the color in the file /images/bg.jpg? Wonder if I could also substitute a background image (such as a piece of canvas) for the background? Maybe a modification to one of the .css files (such as style.css or, for the blue colored theme, blue.css)?
Neat theme, generally.
Comment by seany — January 27, 0:44
seany,
The main background color is set in style.css. Open the file and look for the body selector at the top of the file.
If you also want to use an image as the background, use the following syntax:
background: #44484F url(/path-to-image);
Changing the background color or using an image will however reveal a border around the reading area, due to the theme drop shadow (in bg.jpg).
I have included png versions of the headers and bg.jpg in the extras subfolder for the next update because a lot of people have requested them. Using these will solve the ugly border issue in all browsers but IE5/6, so be sure to check out for updates!
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — January 27, 2:05
Hey tommmmmmm !
Any plans on making a black theme for Mandigo… I think it would be sweet with all black (maybe embossed) icons.
If not maybe you would let me use the original files to give it a shot myself.

Comment by Mats — January 27, 22:27
Hey Tommmmm - that suggested change to style.css works for the background of the blog. I also tweaked the color for posts in the .post area, but for some reason when my test blog loads, the left panel background (where posts are displayed) initially is displayed in the ‘new’ color (pink) and then is covered over with white. Not sure what to change.
looking forward tothe png’s. -s

Doesn’t work with IE6, which unfortunately 50% of my visitors use.
Lovely theme & looks great in Firefox though.
Comment by Chris — January 28, 17:04
Mats, I have already tried making a grey/black scheme but I was not satisfied with the results. I you want to make one for yourself just pick any scheme and desaturate all of the images with your favorite image manipulation software.
seany, the white background is part of bg.jpg, so this is the file you have to edit.
Chris, what does not work with IE? I have just tested it again to make sure I had not missed something. The theme shows up nicely even on a fresh Win98 install, which uses IE5.

I had this working briefly before I ran into unrelated problems with my WP upgrade. Had to trash the upgrade and reinstall from scratch. Now Mandigo won’t work–I get a blank white page. I’m pretty clueless about the tech side of things, but I did have to edit my config.php so that $table_prefix = “wp1_” rather than “wp_”. Any chance that’s the culprit? If so, is there a fix? If not, any other ideas? I love this theme and really want it to work!
Comment by Lisa — January 29, 2:16
Much Thanks, Tommmmmm… changing the bg.jpg and the background entry in the css file did the trick. I was able to place a canvas clip art in various shades for posts, sidebar, body, etc.
I also tested this on IE6/win98 and Firefox/win98 and so far, it looks OK. Don’t have IE7/Vista but might find an install at the library.
If anyone wants the css code, here it is:
in .body area change background to:
background: #FFCCFF url(’images/canbg.jpg’) repeat fixed center;
canbg is a piece of clip art (any size) that easily (seamlessly) repeats, desaturated to about 50% grey.
You can also apply this or other clip art to other areas such as #sidebar #footer #page …etc.
Maybe I’ll start a page with a compilation of tips.

Comment by seany — January 29, 6:12
Hi Lisa,
Mandigo uses standard WordPress functions so table_prefix doesn’t matter.
White pages usually show up when a php script dies because of an error.
I can see from your login page that you are currently using 2.1, under which the theme works fine. Have you tried deleting the wp-content/themes/mandigo subfolder and reinstalling it?
seany, I’m glad you could finally tweak Mandigo to your taste!
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — January 29, 15:15
I’ve deleted and reinstalled the wp-content/themes/mandigo subfolder three times now. The first time, I just re-uploaded the original extracted folder from my local hard drive; the second time, I uploaded the compressed files from my hard drive to the server and extracted them there; the third time I re-downloaded from this site, extracted locally, then uploaded.
I can use other themes–the ones that came with WP 2.1, others that I’ve downloaded, just not mandigo. And like I said, it initially worked. I had upgraded from 1.? to 2.1, installed mandigo, then something went kablooey and I had to delete everything and reinstall. That’s when it refused to work.
Any other suggestions?
Comment by Lisa — January 29, 18:00
Lisa, if other themes work, then it could be that the database got corrupt during your upgrade. Mandigo uses wp_options table to store its settings.
If scrapping the database is not an option, you will have to delete the theme settings from wp_options: if you have access to a command-line interface to the mysql database, try the following:
- login to the database
- type “USE wordpress” without quotes, wordpress being the DB_NAME value from your wp-config.php
- type “DELETE FROM wp_options WHERE (SELECT option_name REGEXP ‘^mandigo’);” to delete mandigo entries
If you would rather like someone (me) to do it for you, please provide me with your database credentials at the email address given in the README file.

Hi Tom
Great theme, but I’ve just noticed that the calender hasn’t changed to February on my blog. Can you give me some help. http://www.seoltd.co.uk

Tom
It appears that the “Adhesive” Plugin is causing the calender to stay stuck on January, as the sticky post called welcome is dated 16th January. When I turn the plugin off, the calender changes to February. Do you know how I could fix this?
Thanks

+ added an option to change the body background color
* reworked the pages navigation
- dropped the option to make the black stripe span multiple lines, this is now done with css
* the theme now uses png files for the main aera decorations
- deleted the extras/ subfolder
* fixed the calendar caption issue
* pages are now sorted according to menu_order rather than alphabeticaly
* fixed some CSS warnings

Your a star. It works perfectly well now.

Comment by Tom — February 2, 21:03
I think I have located the IE6 problem. It only occurs when there are posted images larger than the content column… for some reason they aren’t resized in IE. This causes the sidebar to be dropped to the bottom of the page. Reproduced on two different machines with IE 6.0.2900.2180 vs. Firefox 1.5.
Other than that detail, this is one of the best executed themes I’ve ever seen. Kudos.
Comment by bfd — February 4, 7:10
Fantastic theme as I love the ability to easily switch from color to color. My question, is there any way at all to randomly generate the theme color choice each time you refresh the page? I know, it’s crazy. But on my old site I randomly generated the header image each time the page refreshed and I’m picturing having a header image that matches the template color (as you have now, only with family photos) in each color folder and just randomly picking a different color folder on each load.
I know that it’s probably impossible, but just thought that I would ask. Thanks again for a great free theme.
Comment by JP — February 4, 16:11
bfd, this is due to the fact that IE ignores the max-width property. I will have to find a javascript and/or php workaround to resolve this issue. Thanks for pointing it out!
JP, randomly changing schemes is not only feasible, but it’s actually quite easy. Here’s how:
- open functions.php
- insert the following lines in just below the register_sidebar() call (line #2)
$schemes = array(’blue’,'red’,'green’,'pink’,'purple’,'orange’,'teal’);
update_option(’mandigo_scheme’,$schemes[array_rand($schemes,1)]);
That’s it!
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — February 4, 17:35
Thanks for the quick reply tom, I’m excited to get that working, but I put those two lines in here:
——————–
Comment by JP — February 4, 19:09
if (function_exists(’register_sidebar’)) register_sidebar();
$schemes = array(’blue’,’red’,’green’,’pink’,’purple’,’orange’,’teal’);
update_option(’mandigo_scheme’,$schemes[array_rand($schemes,1)]);
and I’m getting an error:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting ‘)’ in /home/jaypopsu/public_html/wp-content/themes/mandigo-14/functions.php on line 4
Comment by JP — February 4, 19:11
Well, I jumped the gun a little. I went back and retyped the (’) and (,) and the site is up again without error, however the colors don’t seem to change on page change or browser refresh … check it out: http://thepolettos.com/
Comment by JP — February 4, 19:16
Um, I had it working before I posted it here.
Did you cut/paste the lines from my post or typed them? If you typed them, you may have made a typo.
It could also be that you are using PHP3, which does not have all the array functions.
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — February 4, 19:42
Nope, I cut and pasted and then got that error listed in #43 … so I went back in and just redid the apostrophes and commas.
I also checked my host and it’s running PHP v. 4.4.4
I’ll cut and paste again.
Comment by JP — February 4, 19:50
Same result as before, had to change some of the apostrophes.
Comment by JP — February 4, 20:02
JP, try replacing all apostrophes (’) with double quotes (”), it may do the trick.
$schemes = array(”blue”,”red”,”green”,”pink”,”purple”,”orange”,”teal”);
update_option(”mandigo_scheme”,$schemes[array_rand($schemes,1)]);
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — February 4, 21:24
Well Tom, it doesn’t crash, but it doesn’t work either. Hey, great theme anyway. I’m still going to use it - I don’t want to waste any more of your time. Not sure if it matters, but I’m using WP v. 2.0.5
Comment by JP — February 5, 3:28
nice design
Comment by James — February 5, 3:43
Tom, it worked!!! I originally cut and pasted your revised code from above and it didn’t work, but this morning I redid all of the double quotes - because in my editor (Dreamweaver) they weren’t showing up correctly - and re-uploaded it and now it works. Why would the double quotes work and not the apostrophes? The original code uses only apostrophes …
Any way, thanks for sticking with me. Now it’s time to create a header for each color!
Comment by JP — February 5, 14:04
Hi JP, I’m glad it worked!
Single and double quotes should work the same in this case, but I realized after I posted it that some of the quotation marks had somehow been changed to apostrophes. My guess is that it’s the site’s backend that translated them.
Anyway, it worked. I told you it was easy!

Hi Tom,
I LOVE YOUR THEME! I am having a small issue though. When I upgraded to version 1.8 I started to have the calendar caption issue. the thing is I only have on one blog when I updated two identically..
Here are the links:
Messed up:

working as aweseome as usual:
http://www.blog.mintcherry.com
It seems like it added a line break in the http://www.mintcherry.com calendar. Is there an easy fix?
Thanks!
Beaux
Comment by Beaux — February 6, 7:44
Hi Beaux,
The “linebreak” is actually a space reserved for the calendar navigation links.
This space is empty on your first site because there are no posts in January.
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — February 6, 19:17
After switching to this theme, all of the photos in my posts no longer display as they did in my old theme. They are all left justified with the text wrapping around them. If I want to have a post that is text, then a photo, then text, and then another photo, I can’t get that to work. And I can’t get photos to align to the center. Using the tag doesn’t work. Any suggestions?
Comment by Anthony — February 6, 19:29
Hi Anthony,
Mandigo uses CSS to have images float in text. The CSS property overrides the HTML align attribute.
The way to fix this is to override the default property by adding class=”nofloat” to your IMG tags.
Hope this helps!
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — February 6, 20:05

Comment by lomig — February 7, 6:33
Beaux, I have done some minor alignment adjustments in 1.8, and I am now pretty sure you are using two different versions of Mandigo on your two sites. This may be the reason why blog.cherrymint.com shows up differently.
Thanks for the puzzling issue!
Lomig, The IE6 issue you are talking about is very likely to be caused by one of you plugins or widgets. Have you tried disabling them one at a time? I would start by disabling the “democracy” widget which loads some additional CSS files.
Let me know if it works.

Is it possible to always have the menu showing ?
Now, when I click an article, the menu (sidebar) disappears.
Comment by tjeerdoo — February 7, 15:13
Hi tjeerdo,
To have the sidebar always show up you will have to edit some php files:
- open single.php and near the top of the file, change class=”widecolumn” to class=”narrowcolumn”
- do the same thing in archives.php
This is because when the widecolumn class is used, the sidebar is set to be hidden.

mmm, I changed both files but the menu still disappears when I click an article
Comment by tjeerdoo — February 7, 15:48

Both files require this other modification:
At the bottom, just before <?php get_footer(); ?>, add <?php get_sidebar(); ?>
Consult index.php for an example.

Comment by Michel — February 7, 18:06
Hi Michel,
Your site looks fine in Opera, FireFox and IE, so I’m not sure what your problem is.
I see you are using a custom background, so you want to upgrade to Mandigo 1.8 so that the reading area blends nicely with your background (1.8 uses transparent PNGs, works with IE). Be sure however to make a backup of your current theme so that you don’t lose all of your modifications during the upgrade process.
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — February 7, 18:41
Can someone please help me, I am trying to change the background of my whole page (not only the posts) and I cannot get it done…
This is how the top of my style css looks like and my bg.jpg is an all black picture.
Thanks,

I know this is a fixed width theme, which I like, but I am wondering if it is possible to modify the theme to get a total fixed width of 1000px vs. the current width of around 760px?
Comment by Carson — February 9, 2:34
Hans, exactly what are you trying to modify? the body bgcolor or the reading area background? Mandigo 1.8 has an option to change the body background color, which also makes the reading area shadow blend nicely.
Carson, I have thought about making a wider version but it would require a separate release for the download to not become too big. However, since you are not the first one to show interest in it, it may happen.
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — February 9, 4:14
Tom, thanks for your reply. I want to change the body background, the part that’s grey now. I want to make it black.

I am running into the same problem as Michel was;
“The footer doesn’t work on my site : no link … only “normal” formatted text.” I do notice it works fine in Firefox but the links in the footer do not work when viewed in IE 6 or Avant Browser. I see some users using this theme have working links when viewed in any browser, but mine only work in Firefox.
Comment by Derrick — February 9, 7:18
Derrick & Michel, a fix for this will be included in the next update, sorry!
Hans, if you are using Mandigo 1.8, just go to the WP dashboard, then Presentation, then Theme Options and you should see the editbox to change the background color, below the color schemes: black is #000000.
If you are using an older version, either upgrade to 1.8 now, or wait for 1.9 to come out.

Hi, t0m. I have to say straight off, this them is friggin awesome. I have one problem though. I can’t for some reason get the widgets to work. I downloaded the latest build from the autommatic people and their website. Installed all the files, also put the scriptaculous folder in wp-includes/js/ folder. I activated the widgets plugin in the WP admin panel. But when going to the widget/sidebar page. The widgets aren’t draggable. I’ve googled and search almost every forum, but no luck. the readme of the automatix people suggests the either the scriptaculous files are misplaced or the browser is not running the js files. The browser must be fine, because its not working from multiple browsers and multiple computers (im using firefox, but also tried IE). The mouse pointer changes to the 4 headed arrow when going over the widgets, but cant drag them. I’ve tried reinstalling (replacing) the wp-includes folder and also even re-installing your theme. Any suggestions come to mind? (by the way, when going to the sidebar page, i get an error returned from firefox in its error console that looks like this: Error: Element.childrenWithClassName is not a function

Whenever I add a link to the blogroll my site wont load. I have tried various different calls in sidebar.php but for some reason it doesnt work.
has anyone else ran into this issue?
Comment by Brad — February 12, 15:31
Web_fury, this is really weird. Mandigo works fine with widgets so the problem is probably not related to the theme. It could possibly be a conflict between some plugins, have you tried disabling all plugins but widgets? If this does not work, I would try installing an older stable version of the widgets plugin.

Love your theme. I just wish I could see it on my site. All i get is the actual HTML without any style sheet showing up. I’ve followed your instructions and looked at my files on the server and they are all there. Every other theme i’ve uploaded works well, just not this one. No clue why.
Any ideas?
Comment by Carlos — February 16, 22:45

Superb theme! Well framed and aesthetically attractive. I’ve read about excluding pages from the header section, but is it possible to make these ‘buttons’ into hard links? Alongside the standard ‘Home’ and ‘About’ pages, I’d like to have a link to my external phpWebGallery gallery. Cheers for all your fantastic work, t0mmmmmmm!

thanks for your answer. My problem was not due to plugins, but to the IE version : the problem has disapeared at home, although i use IE too…
BUT, i have the same problem as Anthony, i would like my images to be “nofloat” (no text wrapping around the image) but i tried your class=”nofloat” in the stuff, and it doesn’t work…could you help me, please ? or if anthony is reading us, can he contact me to say if it worked…?
thanks,

To anyone who has experienced the same issue as Carlos, the error is due to the rewriting engine. The problem only occurs when pretty permalink are enabled though. This will be fixed in 1.10.
Scott, I have added your suggestion to the todo list, thanks!
kiwi, what do you mean by ‘hard link’?
To add a new link to the header navigation, edit header.php, clone the HOME link and edit it so that it point to your gallery. That’s it!
lomig, you’re right, it just doesn’t work. Fixed in 1.10 too. Thank you for pointing it out.

Hey Tom, thanks a lot for solving the problem. Your theme is great.
Comment by Carlos — February 18, 22:04
Tom,
Thanks for the beautiful theme. I’m new to Wordpress, PHP, and podcasting so I’m pleased to find your template. I explored a lot of themes but kept coming back to Mandigo for its tremendous quality and functionality.
I’m using Wordpress 2.1, Firefox v2.0 (Mac). I upgraded to Mandigo v1.9 today, but since then I’ve not been able to get my own header graphic to load. As with v1.8, I replaced your default head.jpg (blue) with my own 737×226 graphic but yours still loads. I’ve flushed the cache in my browser to no avail. I’ve also tried a different browser. The process worked fine in v1.8, so I’m wondering what went wrong.
Here is the directory path:
wordpress > wp-content > themes > mandigo-14 > images > blue
I appreciate any help you can give.
Thanks…

I just love the random schemes! My god, Tom has created a masterpiece in this one. And the php was easy enough for me to modify for my own special look. But right out of the box this one is a beauty. And the fact that it integrates easily with widgets is a real plus in my book. I’ve tried lots of themes but this one is by far and away the best and most polished I’ve seen.
Very impressive work.
Thanks, Tom.

Terry, this is another bug. The wide header images are being requested instead of the standard ones. Thank you!
I would also like to take some time to thank everyone for the feedback, kind comments, suggested features and the help with translation. Mandigo would not be the same without you, the users. Thanks!

OK, Tom. Great! I just renamed my graphic to head-1024.jpg and it works fine.

Hi Tom,
I am using Mandigo 1.9 and Wordpress 2.1. I have an issue here which has been bugging for the past month.
I am using Ultimate Tag Warrior and trying to get the tag clouds to appear in the Sidebar Widget. I tried using ceejayoz’s plugin, but can’t get it to work, when a lot of others I have read in the comments worked like a charm.
http://ceejayoz.com/wordpress-plugins/tag-cloud/#footnote-1-84
Is the theme having any problems with this?
BTW, THANK YOU FOR THIS AWESOME THEME!
One of the best and flexible ones I have found, and will certainly use it for a long time I think!
Comment by Thien — February 22, 16:15
I tried version 1.10, it loads without a problem, but the lay-out is completely wrong: all elements are displayed one after another, the header is not loaded, etc. Previous version, (1.7.1) works without a problem. Any idea? I have created a test page for you to see at http://www.topsoft.be/test
Comment by Ludo Rubben — February 22, 23:48
When you look at the source, it is clear that some variables are not read correctly.
.php” type=”text/css” media=”screen” />
/.css” type=”text/css” media=”screen” />
In these 2 lines the variables should have been replaced by their values, and are not. So the system does not find the style sheets. Question is: why does it work in 1.07.1 and not in 1.10.
Comment by Ludo Rubben — February 23, 0:34
Ludo, I think you made the same mistake I did.
When you extract your files, they are nested two levels down.
“wp-content/themes/mandigo-14/mandigo-14/”
You should only upload 1 level of it to your server.
“wp-content/themes/mandigo-14/”
Comment by Thien — February 23, 0:34
Thien, Thanks for your reaction, but I have checked that…
The new version is at the same level as the old one, but the paths to the style sheets are not resolved correctly, so they are not loaded at all.
I will try to replace the variables with a hardcoded path, just to check, and I will come back with the result.
Comment by Ludo Rubben — February 23, 0:41
Thien, this is probably due to an incompatibility between WP 2.1 and the widget (and/or the required plugin). The link you gave has not been updated for a few months.
Ludo, your php installation is not configured to read php short tags. You may enable them by using the short_open_tag php.ini directive:
http://www.php.net/manual/en/ini.core.php#ini.short-open-tag
If editing php.ini is not possible, try and replace all occurences of ‘<?=’ with ‘<?php echo ‘
Hope this helps!

Tom, I upgraded to your newest version - it’s great to have that info in the Theme tab. Everything is working great. I’m glad that you incorporated the color switcher from my earlier request. I have another that might seem off the wall. I love the 1024 width now - any thoughts to making a 3 column option? This would allow me to create a super footer and still get all of my sidebar info to fit. I’m sure it’s not that simple. Again, thanks for a great theme!

Thanks again for the added help!
Comment by David — February 24, 19:08
Lduo, thanks for pointing it out, I may revert to classic php tags.
JP, 3 columns? thoughts? Actually yes, I have been thinking about it since the wide version was implemented, and that would not be so difficult. Not sure if it will be in 1.11 though.
civil, for instructions on how to get wordpress to display in your language, see:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress_in_Your_Language
Once WordPress will be in your language, the calendar should be translated as well.

I try to edit them in the Presentation -> Sidebar Widgets after activating “Sidebar Widgets” v1.2.1.20070210b in the plugins section, however the default ones that come with the theme are the only ones to be seen, and when I try to edit them in the presentation section it does nothing. RGSPro, yes you are probably missing something. Widgets should work fine out of the box.
As stupid as this may sound, did you drag and drop widgets to the sidebar from the widgets subpanel?
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — February 26, 3:23
Holy smokes!
Exactly what I was searching for. Thanks Tom. I’m really excited now, can’t wait to start experimenting and all that. I’ll definitely email you as well.
Just quickly in the meantime, is there any way to reduce the height of the header image just a little bit? Can I just create a smaller header with the same name and replace the original? Or would it mess up something else?
Thanks again dude.
Comment by Ravi Kalmady — February 26, 4:56
I sure did drag them and drop em. I lined em all up the way i wanted but no dice. I had troubleshooted it for about an hour, reinstalled the theme a few times, tried a few different things, but nothing.

Well, I did crop the head.jpg to 737 x 192 (from 737 x 226 original) and replaced the image in the images (Red theme) subfolder, but guess what…. nothing’s changed!
I keep seeing the orig 737 x 226 header (head.jpg) though I’ve FTP’d the cropped head.jpg, even after repeated cache chean-ups. lol…. what am i doing wrong?

Awesome Tom, can’t wait. It’s great that you’re still making improvements on this theme … so different than many others. Thanks again.
Comment by JP — February 28, 0:59
Hi, Tom.
Upgraded to 1.11, today. Mandigo, the best WP theme available, continues to improve! I’d love a 3-column option, too.
My problem:
The “More” tag doesn’t seem to be working. Any thoughts?
Thanks.
Comment by Terry — February 28, 1:51
Great theme with many possibilities to change.
Comment by Jens — February 28, 18:39
Ravi, once you have cropped/resized your header image, you will need to edit style.css.php to reflect the new height (search for #headerimg). You will also need to resize/crop header.png and change the height value for the #header selector (default is 243px).
Terry, the more tag seems to work fine (just double-checked).
Is anyone else having the same issue?

Thanks, tom. Edited the style.css.php, and, to me at least, the site looks less ‘weighty’ with a slimmer header. (I edited the header.png to the new size, but didn’t upload the cropped header.png, but it still looks perfect.)
I tried reducing the top margin and padding to 5px (in the #header), but for some reason, its not showing up?
If I’m not choking you with questions, is there a way to add a “Register” link in Meta?
Thanks again Tom. Really cool design with lotsa flexibility.

Hi there!
I love this theme, and I’ve just put it on one of my website.
One of the things I try to do it make it validate completely and the single warning/error I got was that the style tag for last minute css was empty. Is it possible to just add a /* */ into the style tag for the validation nazi’s like me please?!
Cheers!
Great work!
Comment by Dan Atkinson — March 10, 14:46
I really like your theme and want to use it, but is there a way to activate an option so it will display my archive months in the sidebar?
Also how can I change where it displays the categories in each post, currently it’s on the top of the post next to the “Posted By:” I would rather have it next to the comments on the bottom of the post.
Keep up the awesome work!
Comment by Frostfox — March 10, 15:21
nicruo, the sidebar call must be placed before the #content div, just like if you wanted it to be on the left side. See index.php for an example.
Dan, it will be fixed in the next release. Thanks for reporting this!
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — March 10, 15:33
Frostfox, in index.php, change “Posted by: %s in %s” with “Posted by: %s”. This will prevent this part from being translated, but I doubt you care. Then put “<?=get_the_category_list(’, ‘)?>” in the p tag, along with comments info, and that should do the trick.
For the archives list, head to widgets.wordpress.com and look for the ‘drop down archive’ plugin.

Hate to bother you again but I am having trouble removing the page overlay and the weblog title and tagline from the header. I just want the header without any words on there. I am assuming it is located in the header.php, but not sure which code to modify. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Comment by Frostfox — March 11, 17:10
Oh and one more thing, which code to I change to slightly increase the font on the post titles?
Comment by Frostfox — March 11, 17:29
Tom,
There are a few small things in the theme. There seems to be an error here: “Error in parsing value for property ‘border-top’. Declaration dropped.” I looked at it and didn’t find anything unusual, perhaps you can find and fix it.
Then there is the lastminute.css, I have deleted the reference to it, because it generates errors and is not used anyway.
Then something strange: I use the 1024 lay-out and when I post some pictures at full-width, followed by some pics at 50%, these are displayed at the side, over the sidebar in Firefox (no problem in Explorer).
Here’s the code I used:
This displays the 50% to the right of the other one:
————
img width=”100%” vspace=”10″ src=”somepicture.jpg” alt=”blah”
img width=”50%” vspace=”10″ class=”centered” src=”somepicture.jpg” alt=”blah”
————
This is how it works OK:
————
img width=”100%” vspace=”10″ class=”centered” src=”somepicture.jpg” alt=”blah”
img width=”50%” vspace=”10″ class=”centered” src=”somepicture.jpg” alt=”blah”
————
So I think something causes a problem in the CSS file in the definition of .img
Remark: If you put a centered paragraph after the 100% picture, the 50% picture displays normally. Without the extra paragraph, the 50% picture displays to the right of the 100% pîcture unless you add the centered class to the 100% picture.
Hope you can find the culprit and fix it.
)
Thanks in advance.
(btw: am using version 1.10, don’t tell me that these things are fixed in the latest version…

Hi Tom-
When I choose this theme in WP, how can I be sure to get the wider stylesheet?
Thanks!
Comment by The Zoner — March 13, 1:50
Frostfox, in header.php, the h1 tag is the blog title, div class=”description” is the blog description, and if you want to remove the page navigation too, chop the ul tag. you should end up with an empty div id=”headerimg”
The size of titles is set in style.css.php. Look for the first h2 selector and modify the default 1.6em value.
Ludo, 1.11
There
Comment by t0mmmmmmm — March 13, 2:16
typo, sorry
Ludo, there’s an option in 1.11 to prevent images from using the float property. If you dont feel like upgrading, you can either assign the nofloat class to your images, or remove the float property from the img selector in style.css. As you already found out, centered paragraphs reset the float attribute too.
Zoner, once Mandigo is your current theme, go to the Presentation subpanel, and open the ‘Theme Options’ page. There you should find the checkbox to enable the 1024px layout.

Comment by RK — March 13, 3:13
Doesn’t work correctly tom. I did what you suggested by removing the h1 tag in the header(didn’t work), then trying the empty div id=”headerimg” suggestion, but both suggestions effected the blog posts by removing the date colored background next to the post title. Why changing the header effected the rest of the page I am unsure of. I just want a clean header with no text on it. Any other suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.
Comment by Frostfox — March 13, 9:46
RK, thanks for the mention, I appreciate that!
Forstfox, it should work, I’ve just double checked. The bottom of your header.php file should look like this:
<div id=”header”>
<div id=”headerimg”>
</div>
</div>
If things still go wrong, then try to use an unmodified style.css.php
