  5. I love this theme, but I’m new to wordpress. I’ve plopped it down in my themes directory, but wordpress says that it is missing a stylesheet. Is something missing from my install, this theme, or am I just doing something else wrong? Please let me know if you can, thanks a bunch.

  6. I really like this theme. Nice, simple, and clean. Maybe a few more color options if you update it? Keep up the good work.

  7. i think this is a great theme. Can’t use it though, the bright colors just don’t fit what I write about. But again, Great Job.

  8. Just wanted to add here that I’ve just updated it a bit - there’s a new color added to the options page, so you now have a choice of Orange (default), Blue and Red. I may add more colors later on (like green, purple (?! maybe!), and black are inital color options.) - but for those of you that like to tinker, it’s really easy to change the colors as you please. I may insert instructions on how to do so on my website, or add it to the zip file in the future!

  9. Wow, as a first theme, you’ve done an excellent job Shelly! :D

Adding this to my list of “might use in the future themes” ;)

  1. Sara, you probably have the theme files in a subdirectory that’s why it says you can’t find your style sheet. Move all the files one step up and it should work.

  4. 2 stars for me. It looks very nice, but there are some flaws I noticed within 5 mins of installing

-It breaks the links list, merging all categories into one
-non-numbered list does not have bullet points or anything, so looks just like using . This also ruins the sidebar.
-comments are listed in a tiny pop-up window
-titles are changed to all lower-case for some reason

    Good effort though!

  6. bad post up there…sorry…

I just wanted to say that, although your comments are appreciated, Carl, they are simply a matter of personal taste, not “flaws” in the theme as you state.

-It breaks the links list, merging all categories into one

As seen in the test run, yes - it only shows the parent categories. However, this is by design, and I have explicit instructions within the template on how to make the sidebar show the subcategories, if you so desire to have them shown.

-non-numbered list does not have bullet points or anything, so looks just like using . This also ruins the sidebar.

Again, this is viewable within the test run, and made by design. The UL list items are indented and the font color is darker. If the end user would like to have bullet points, it’s simply a matter of removing the “list-style:none;” line from the UL tag in the CSS.

As for how it ruins the sidebar, I don’t understand, since the sidebar currently uses UL lists for all links within it.

comments are listed in a tiny pop-up window

The popup window is also viewable in the test run. Popup windows are also an option given by Wordpress - I simply offered a theme that utilizes it (I haven’t seen many other themes that offer this option, so I thought it would be nice ot put it in there). However, if the end user does *not* want popup windows, they don’t *have* to use them.

-titles are changed to all lower-case for some reason

Again, this is part of the design, and is - again - viewable in the test run. And - again - if the end user doesn’t want this, it’s an easy change by removing “text-transform:lowercase;” from the H1 call in the CSS.

Your comments are a measure of personal preferences, they do not reflect upon the usability or functionality of the theme. I appreciate that your taste in design is not the same as mine, but the things you seem to dislike are viewable from the test run prior to download, and they are not difficult to change at all if you desire to do so. Many of the themes there are altered to fit the end user’s personal taste - mine is as easily altered as any other here to suit you, or whomever else chooses to use it.

  7. All I did was point out some flaws (they are design flaws, so still called flaws) that may not be obvious on the test page. Until you get your own blog running this template, you might not notice some of the poor design decisions.

Yes, they are fixable with CSS. Everything is fixable with CSS, that’s what makes it CSS ;)

Still means that they are still flaws. Fixable flaws, yes, but flaws.

    Comment by Carl — October 18, 19:00

  8. Actually, I *do* have a blog running this template. And again, simply because my personal taste is not the same as yours does not make my decisions “flawed”.

It was not a personal attack upon you, but a response to, what I felt was, improper wording to my theme. That’s all *my* response was. A “flaw” indicates something damaging. None of the aspects you brought up are damaging - they are just not to your taste. That’s all.

  9. Shelly,

I really like this layout and will be uploading it to one of my community action websites as soon as I get permissions set up on my server.

I do think that it is simply a prefrence Carl is talking about, not a flaw. Although you both may feel you were going back and forth with no real point on this debating personal preferences vs design flaws; Carls comments and your responses helped me out, big time.

I am just learning CSS and am barely proficient in html; its nice to understand what people are talking about and then get a “how to” response from the designer.

    Thanks Shelly

  1. I think the script got hijacked.

I have installed a lot of WP and Themes but I have never seen this:

When I try to change the title and tagline options nothing happens on the site but shows the changes in the admin. When I click on the default “blogname.com” you have used as placeholder text I get redirected to this guys page http://www.2007personalstrategicplan.com/

    Crazy!

Yes, I have switched to the default theme and everything goes back to normal. It has to be in this theme.

  2. It’s doing right in the test run. This isn’t a design option is it? ;)

  3. This isn’t a design option is it? ;)

Absolutely not! I have NO idea why it’s doing this.

    Comment by Shelly — January 16, 21:40

  4. okay - due to my idiotically non-functioning foresight (and thanks to Paul there for pointing this out!) I’ve fixed the issue.

I had the theme set to hard-code in the blog name and URL - I once had a reason for doing so, but now I can’t remember what it was. But previously, I had put in a fake URL (one that didn’t exist) to show how to turn your header name into a link.

Well, apparently, some spammer bought the fake domain name I had chosen to use (please refer to the first line in this comment - the one about “idiocy”).

It’s now fixed - and I even went a step further and made a few changes that have been requested of me, but haven’t gotten around to. So, you can read about the changes in the “readme” file that comes with the download, but I’ll highlight them here anyway.

    - moved the header out of the footer.php file, and back into the header.php file (originally, I had done that for SEO “source ordering” reasons, and apparently, most of the people who download it don’t care about source ordering the content :))

    - made room for content within the footer (before, there was a footer, but you couldn’t put content in it without messing up the layout. I’ve fixed that - so you can add footer text to your heart’s content)

    - fixed the dumb mistake that prompted this comment - no need to hard-code your stuff anymore.

So there you have it. Hey, this was my first theme attempt - it was fun, and believe me, I’m learning from my mistakes. Next time it won’t be this bad, I promise! ;)

  5. For the record - I know some of you will now view this theme and see errors in the sidebar. That’s because the theme viewer is running an older version of WordPress. I have updated this theme for WP 2.1. So, if you haven’t upgraded, you probably won’t want to download this one - as it’s now upgraded for the new version of WordPress, and no longer uses tags that are now deprecated.

    Just letting you know!
