I agree, I’ve had about enough of this theme. Too much work, most themes you can switch between with the odd edit of the code if need be. This theme makes life hard work, if I had all my plugins installed before changing it would have just been impossible.

I love this theme. I tried to make the blog content areas a little wider because all my blog pics are 500px wide and strangely enough it looks great in IE, but something isn’t right in firefox. any suggestions? my site is http://www.deepdisch.net. thanks in advance!

super theme! Fairly new to wordpress, but it seems like the !is_single() check at the bottom of index.php isn’t working — there is always a “blank” post on a page or when there is just a single blog entry; I even changed it to (!is_single() && !is_page()) but that still seems to always evaluate to true.
Anyone figure this one out? Or is this just a wordpress bug?
Comment by John — October 6, 19:14

I guess you can’t please everyone.
I would however like to dispute the allegation that I don’t support this theme. I’ve spent dozens of hours updating, answering questions about, and helping people modify this theme. There are dozens of people who can attest to that.
I do have a problem with repeatedly answering the same question(s). And for the most part, I don’t, this is a hobby for me, my job takes priority. Once it stops being enjoyable, I will stop doing it.
The theme is fixed width, it says so in the properties. If you want a theme that isn’t fixed width, pick a different theme.
That all being said, there are bugs, version 2.0 (the 6th update to the theme, for the people who think i don’t support this) is in the works now, and should correct most problems people are having.

LOVE this theme. One question. What is the best size, resolution, etc for the background images? I’m happy to tweak myself, but for some reason, even making the images the same resolution and size as the examples, I end up with much bigger files.

Hi there. I have used the default vistered little theme in my website (www.cuartooscuro.com.mx). Now i am having a little problem. I hope you can help me with this: when i swap the wallpaper and then go to another page of my blog, the background returns to the default wallpaper (images/wallpaper1.jpg)… I wonder why is it doing it, because it always returns to the same wallpaper and makes the change useless. Does anyone know what do i have to do? Thanks.

Great theme. Questions:
1. What kind of PNGs will work for the blogbackground? Tried changing the color and increasing the opacity, but it came up completely transparent…
2. For every thumbnail I have, there is an alternating blank thumbnail which returns a white background when clicked on. We’re (unfortunately) using IIS, is it perhaps an IIS issue?
Thanks, again great theme.

In response to John in comment 159 (and anyone else who might be interested), the fix for the empty post container appearing at the bottom of some pages is to use “if(is_paged())” instead of “if(!is_single())” at the bottom of “index.php”
is_single() refers to a single post page (i.e. the page you land on when you click on a post’s title, as opposed to a page with only 1 post on it). So essentially, what Nik’s code is doing is placing that empty container on every page that is NOT a single post page, including Category pages that only have 1 post in them.
What the code should really be looking for are “paged” pages, i.e. Categories that are split up into more than one page because the number of posts/days is higher than the amount defined in the “Options->Reading->Show at most:” field (in the Wordpress Admin area).

I love this theme. The first time I installed it, it installed fine. However, I was confused as to how to get the background to change or how to add my own personal header. After trying to drag-n-drop JPegs and/or PNG’s into the appropriate file, it suddenly came up as missing file sheet in my Wordpress editor. Any suggestions as to what I did wrong? I’ve uninstalled it, and reinstalled it with the same results.

I like this theme, but I need to remove the excess padding that shows up on the right side of the ‘Page’ menus. I have an, ‘About’ page, but the text stops short by about 50PX. There’s an inch of black space on the right side of the screen that doesn’t look right.
What part of the code do I change to make the text go across the entire screen when I view one of my ‘Pages’?NOTE: The black space does NOT occur on the daily blog pages. It only shows up on the ‘About’ page.

Wow, I’m a bit surprised this has gotten as much attention as it has. It’s a great theme, but I’m still using your (slightly modified) Scary Little theme. It’s a bit more friendly, somehow. Plus, as much as I want people to switch from IE, 60% of my traffic is from IE6, so I can’t use a lot of transparent PNG’s. God I hate IE.

I would like to point out that the guys over at photojunkie.ca have done an excellent job modifying this theme to make it their own. This shows that even if this theme (as-is) doesn’t fit with your site, if you know HTML and some PHP and CSS, you can customize it to fit and still get the functionality.

When I open it with Mazilla Firefox, It shows up perfect. When I open it with internet explorer, the daily blog posts fall to the bottem. The first one is at the bottem, and then anything added just drops below that. Help? Other wise, It’s great! 4 1/2 stars!

[...] So. Here we are. Toastforbrekkie.com. It’s been a long time in coming, eh? Funny that Nas was just pondering the future of her blog. Please let me know what you think of the site. I’ve been agonizing over the design for weeks, doing my best to fix all the little details and make things look just so. I increased the font size from the original template in an effort to make it more legible; tell me if you think the aesthetic suffered. Big ups to Nik Iliadis for the template. Also mad props to Patrick Chia for the flickr widget. Oh, and due to the unscrupulous myspace kiddies who would dare leech photos from lay-c.com, Lacey had to block all external linking to the pics she hosts. Thus all the embedded pics in my previous entries will show up here as broken links. If you really want me to go back and fix them (download, upload, relink and republish) then leave a comment on the entry in question. I’ll handle it on an as-requested, a la carte basis. [...]

After viewing hundreds of themes, this is by far the best one I’ve seen. The ability for the reader to select a background of choice is a wonderful touch. Since I find this theme heads and shoulders above many of the ones available, I feel bad adding to the list of questions that you answer on a regular basis. Fortunately, I have a similar issue to the previous poster in which text that I write in the footer.php ends up on the top right side of my blog just above the sidebar. The ironic part is that it looks perfect in IE and Opera (both bottom centered). I only notice the issue when I’m viewing my page in FF or Netscape.

It is strange that nobody asked yoy about putting videos of youtube, for instance. The fixed width carries on many problems to do that, even changing the mesures. I’ve tried a couple of pluggings and I’ve got many problems still.
Any idea to do it??? Anyway, great great theme.

For the people who are noting that this theme doesn’t work right in IE, it wasn’t designed around IE, and frankly (from what I understand,) he wasn’t really concerned about it. In fact, since transparent PNGs don’t work in IE6, I believe he started this theme with a complete understanding that it wouldn’t look right there. I’m not sure if that message still exists in the theme when someone uses IE to view the page, but he made it clear that you should not be using that browser anyway. And you shouldn’t.

Looks like there is an issue with the 1.6 version of this theme and the new WP 2.1 release. I think it may have something to do with the autosave feature. Not sure though but when using this theme I can no longer add or edit posts. Hopefully this is corrected quickly as it is an awesome theme.

Comment by dutch falcon — July 10, 18:06
Not widget compatible, and I think the background takes away from the true content of the blog. Just OK, IMO.
Comment by Wizzel Cogcarrier Wizzleton IV — July 11, 1:57
*shrug* To each his own. In order to make the theme widgets compatible I would have to bunch all the menu items together into one container. I think that would detract from the overall design. Thanks for your feedback though.
Comment by Nik — July 11, 5:15
And oh yeah, the backgrounds are user replaceable (just drag new jpg’s into the wallpapers folder) so if the background distracts from the content, use a plain wallpaper. Just saying.

Not bad at all, on higher resolutions the backgrounds become repeatable and they all look bad as tiles. Also the fixed background makes pages lag a lot more on any system, but that is not your fault as it is a lack in the coding of the browsers probably.
This theme has very much of a Windows Vista feel to it, I like it a lot. Will probably not use it but I hope you submit more themes, you seem to know very much what you’re doing!
Comment by m1d — July 12, 22:18
Agreed, the wallpapers that i included were just samples. As i mentioned on my own site, the theme looks sooo much better with a good tileable background. Unfortunately, I couldnt find any that were “releasable” and really didnt feel like making any. I have since made a few that will make it into the next release.
And, thanks for all the praise
I’ll be sure to keep the themes coming.
Comment by Nik — July 13, 0:54
Is it possible to make this theme auto-resize, rather than being fixed width?
Comment by strxuniv — July 13, 1:21
No
Comment by Nik — July 13, 2:17
Wait, anything is possible. But am I going to rewrite it so it auto resizes? No. (sorry, It would just be way too hard.) With gif’s that kind of stuff is easy because you can lay gif’s over each other. With png’s the image below it shows through, so corners are damned near impossible to do at a not fixed width. Someone is sure to prove me wrong however.
Comment by Nik — July 13, 2:20
I’m loving this theme, but you said the only way to make it widget compatible is if you make the sidebar one box. Maybe you can make a widget version like that, for people that don’t mind, and keep this one so that people who wouldn’t like one sidebar box, can just use this.
Comment by Joseph — July 13, 4:44

This is a beautiful theme. I don’t like the sidebar though or the banner. You know you scary little monkey theme for scarylittlemonkey.com, well I like the links on the side to pages that contain links, but for vistered, I’d it would be nice to see the links in the banner. It would leave more viewing space for the background pictures. Or one sidebar of links would also be good too.

I really liked this theme until Nik put in his editorial comment on IE in the top of the page. While I know IE isn’t standard the usability for others is diminished by this function executing. Putting this comment at the bottom of the page would be more appropriate as it is the designers comment not the bloggers comment.

Comment by Jon — August 13, 15:35
Hands down this theme has truly amazing potential. I first looked at it on Fire Fox and had to have it. I installed it yesterday morning and it worked beautifully.
This morning I wanted to ask if there was a way to make it so the background would not tile, for those viewing on large screens and found out there was a new version released.
So I installed it. This is when I found out the first version didn’t work with IE.
However, the new version, at least on my end, has problems. It won’t display the bubble windows where everything lives… all I see is the background, the text, and the thumbnails.
Also, I put the sidebar on the left, and now the content displays in the center but beneath the sidebar.
I’m looking at the site with IE 6.0.2900.2180
dakev.com/myarmytimes if you’d like to see what I’m talking about.
While I truly hope you are able to work out all the kinks, I definitely think you deserve some cash for your hard work. If you would kindly point me to a pay pal donation button, I’d be happy to say thanks with five bucks. It’s certainly not enough for all your hard work, but all the same, I’d like to say thanks.

Vishnu, is the bubblebox the box on the bottom? What is supposed to display there? In FireFox, if it is what I think it is, it is blank….
Comment by Jon — August 13, 18:01
Wow, a lot of questions to tackle…
Jon: Yes, the tagline is supposed to show up under archive. It seems to me that even if you are on the home page, you are still viewing archives, they just happen to be the most recent archives. The “bubblebox” at the bottom will house your navigation “older” and “newer” links once you have more than one page. That’s not a bug, it was a requested feature.
Jamie: Replace the wallpapers. The wallpapers that are included with the theme are samples. I have yet to find any decent tile-able wallpapers that are free or redistributable. I made a few to send out with Vistered, but I can’t say they are beautiful. Most wallpaper designers will allow you to use their wallpapers on your website, so do so. Without moderately signifigant modification of the code you wont be able to make your wallapers not tile. But if you want to tinker, go ahead, it’s your site. As for your theme not loading properly, that is because the folder you uploaded the theme into has a space in the name. Remove the space and I expect that the theme will work fine.
Vishnu: The problems you are experiencing are because your posts are full of errors. Go into your posts in html view and clear all the extra div tags and un-closed div tags.
If this doesn’t answer your questions, leave a reply, and I will see what I can do.
Comment by Nik — August 13, 18:22
I did notice that there is a bug with the navigation box showing up on pages, and it shouldnt, that will be fixed in the next release.
Comment by Nik — August 13, 18:26
Thanks for the clarifications, Nik! Appreciate it.
Comment by Jon — August 13, 18:52
You were right about the space being in the theme directory. That screwed everything up.
I was unable to get the sidebar on the left though, as the center content wanted to go below the left sidebar. But the fix was as easy as switching the sidebar to the right.
I still feel strongly that I owe you a monetary thanks. I was about to hire someone to update my interface… and I was going to pay a whole hell of a lot more then what I’m paying you.
You need a donation button.

Comment by Jakemelon — August 13, 22:36
Jake: I recommend that you upload the theme into a new folder and then activate the new version. That way if for some reason it doesnt work, you can go back to the good working version.
Comment by Nik — August 14, 2:27
Many people who will be viewing my page have obscenely large displays. And I suspect, no matter large a resolution I plan for, someone out there will have a bigger display.
I’ve used some pretty large background images (unfortunate for my dial-up viewers) but its still tiling on the computers at work. Isn’t there an easy way to turn off the tiling and make it centered with no top margin, on top of a black background?
I’m nowhere near the expert at CSS that you are Nik, but I’m pretty sure this can be done. Is it possible with this theme?
Comment by Jamie Kever — August 14, 12:18
I’m unable to fathom the reasoning for leaving out a Login link in sidebar.php in this theme. I looked in another theme, and it’s simply
I dropped it in there and it works fine.
Why omit this? When I first set up Wordpress on my site, I wanted it to be pretty secure, and gave out usernames/passwords to certain selected people. When I switched to your theme, no one could login.
Otherwise, it’s a great theme, I love it, which is why I went to the trouble to figure out how to add the Login link, and to write to you here.
One other item, not specific to your theme, I have long sentences in posts that protrude beyond the rounded-corner boundaries for posts. What can I do besides reformatting the post contents with extra carriage returns?
Comment by Mike Masquith — August 14, 14:50
Jamie: Again, it isnt possible by just adding some css because there are custom functions that spit out the css and javascript relating to the wallpapers. My suggestion to you is to use tiling wallpapers, until i have the time (and or motivation) to adjust the function.
Mike: The first thing I would suggest to you is that you upgrade to the latest version of Vistered Little. Next, I intentionally left out the login link because I don’t use it. It is very easy to add “/wp-admin” to the end of your url so that you can get into your wordpress administration, and it cuts out a small percentage of people who wouldnt know about that url and may be interested in brute forcing their way into your administration interface. It may be paranoia on my behalf, but I don’t intend to add it to the theme. As for your “long sentences”, the sentences should cut off as they reach the end of the “text block” as they do in all your other posts. You shouldn’t need to add carriage returns. I suspect, and my suspicions were just confirmed, that there are errors in the html in your post. I suggest that you validate your html by clicking the xhtml 1.0 link and correct the errors, paying particular attention to error #2, as that is the one causing your “non breaking” sentences.
Comment by Nik — August 14, 15:11
Wow, thanks for the quick response. (anything under two days always impresses me).
Being a novice to blogging/WordPress/themes, I missed the obvious trick of appending /wp-admin to the URL. I was trying to get some friends/colleagues involved, and temporarily bailed on the Vistered theme because I’d already invited them to check it out and didn’t know what to tell them when they couldn’t see an obvious way to login to respond/comment.
I’m discovering, yes, the post(s) in question do have errors, and I think it’s from the browsers I use. Safari on the Mac won’t even show the editing toolbar when writing posts (bold, italic, indenting, etc.). Thanks for setting me straight on that. It didn’t register with me that the validation tools also check the content of the posts.
I appreciate your quick and accurate help here.
Comment by Mike Masquith — August 14, 15:27
Dumb question, but after I click on a wallpaper swatch to change the background, how do I get it back to the original?
–marty
Comment by Marty — August 15, 4:40
Thanks for the response. I’m still very impressed with this theme.
One more question though, and I think you touch on this in the options section of the theme, but I’m unclear.
I’ve replaced all the wallpapers, however, on occasion, one of the scenic backgrounds that came with the theme still appears. Sometimes IE even gets stuck (frozen) with that displayed.
I don’t want to delete all the options, as I appreciate the skin changes, but I would really like to get rid of the original background.
Any suggestions?
Finally, I was checking out sitrus.css and shiny.css, and it seems like making custom skins is entirely possible. I wonder if you might be interested in discussing the possibility of letting others design skins (maybe a tutorial… or simply taking questions). I would certainly be interested in taking something like that on.
Again, thanks. I’d like to send you money.

I am helping a friend start a blog, he chose your theme, good choice.
I do have the same question from post 73 that was answered in post 79, that is regarding the first bubble box labeled Archives.
I understand your reply, however, this box appears to be an information box since it changes depending upon what is currently active. Neat feature but I believe this to be misleading when you are on the Home Page and it displays Archives, since in a true sense it is not Archives as traditionally defined by all other blogs. I think that it is confusing since it will not display true archives and if I add an Archive box to the page there are now two boxes that say Archive, confusing also.
Is there a way to relabel this bubble box that displays on the homepage?

Just found a slight error, might be something I have done as I have been fiddling around with some things, but nothing I think would have done this.
~ When clicking on the ‘Trackback’ link in the last bubble box on the bottom right when you are viewing a post I get this message.

I really need an ID for this to work.

Seems like the link isn’t picking up the post ID.

Just working on getting Photopress to work with this theme… I suspect the google Map will be the same sort of process.
Nik ~ If you cut up your images a little more..
instead of having just one blogbefore, blog, blogafter. as in
Cell 1
Cell 2
Cell 3
Could it be…
Cell 1
Cell 2
Cell 3
Cell 4
Cell 5
Cell 6
Cell 7
This would mean that you could have the table width or Cell 2 & 6 Width speified in the Options, thus controling the width of the bubble box.
could this work? or something similar. I’m going to set up my theme tables using this method as it will allow me more control on the look.
Comment by Darren Smith — August 18, 13:58
Darren, unfortunately I don’t have time to go back and reply to all your questions right now, however…
That last one struck me. I’m not sure if you realize what you are requesting, but no, I wont move the theme to a table based layout.
Yes, tables would give me an easier way to design the site, but they aren’t acceptable for use in design. I’m not going to explain my reasoning here, just search google, it’s been done, over and over. If anything, I am going to REDUCE the number the number of “cells”, as all that extra markup is NOT semantic. I would use :before and :after to inject the extra html, but then the theme wouldn’t work in ie… Anyway, thats that.

[...] On the quest for a new feel for this here blog, I found this really sweet theme called “Vistered Little v1” which looked fulsik. It had a couple of drawbacks however, a design fault no less, which made it hard to navigate the blog. And out the door it went, ta ta. At the time of writing, I’ve managed to make a firm decision I’m sticking with the current theme named strangely named ‘Glued Ideas‘ using the ‘Subtle’ theme. Hope you’re liking it. This could change again after some use though - I do like to be consistent. [...]

Hi Nik, first of all a big thanks for your theme. And now if you dont mind a question: When I switch the sidebar to the left the center block goes below the sidebar (you can see it in my site). Why is that?. Again, thank you!
Comment by Guillermo — August 19, 3:14
Excuse me, three things: that problem with the center block only happen in IE (6.0), not in firefox or opera (I dont know why that dont surprise me), second. mi site is in http://lamatera.org/blog (is actually almost empty, im just starting with that), and finally sorry for my english…

Hi Nik,
I LOVE this theme!
I want to add to and/or replace some of the wallpapers; is there a set of instructions to do this somewhere?
To replace, do I just replace wallpaper*.jpg in the wallpapers folder with a new one, and that’s it?
What if I want to add more options?
Comment by Beth — August 21, 1:03
Thanks for the response Nik, I understand your points and I do agree, However… I think most people who use, enjoy and thank you for your theme would agree that you are retricted by design.
I’m no expert but I know that after some trial and error I will get the plugins I use to work with this theme. But for a complete Novice that would be impossible.
My Gallery and Google Map plugins are going to be the main attractions with my site as we are travelling. The images for the background will ultimatley be ‘my own’ photos from the main cities we visit. therefore I think this theme wins Good points over the Negative.
I think you should consider making it more flexible as your popularity with this theme will only increase.
Don’t get me wrong Nik, I think your theme is one of the best visual themes I’ve seen. It just needs a little flexability.
~ Beth: Just add / replace .JPG images in the Wallpaper folder and the thumbnails are automatically produced.

The theme is beautiful as is. Great potential to personalize.
I’m stuck on pages (not posts) that have Amazon affiliate links. The “blogafter” doesn’t seem to load after affiliate links and long pages are cut off. Example: http://looselyhomeschool.com/buy-what-kids-read/ How can I get all of the page content to show?
Is this an issue of page length or code? Related to “overflow: hidden”? I know the affiliate links don’t validate as strict XHTML. Does this cause any part of this problem? Thanks.
Comment by Lucy — August 23, 17:43
Somehow, this theme doesn’t want to load the default background… I don’t know whether it’s me… Can someone please clarify this?
At the moment, the background seems to be white all along…

Hi, this probably will be a lame question, but i have to admit that some css issues are beyond my skills… My problem is very simple: I want to put the background thumbnails images in the right side of the blog title. Testing with the position, float and display properties I just get to see all the thumbnails one below another in the left of the page, or i see them in the correct position in the side of the title, but instead of thumbnails there are short vertical lines (a problem with borders and the display property, i think). Somebody can give a hand with this?.

[...] I have changed the theme as you can see, and so far I am happy with how it looks to me, but then on my computer I use either Firefox or Safari, and it looks good on both of them. However, when I tried to use Internet Exploder on a PC at work, it didn’t load well, putting the main boxes in the center below all the sidebar boxes and loading the background images so large that they are not recognizable in some cases. Using IE on the Mac was worse, as Microsanctimonius, I mean, Microsoft has stopped updating it, realizing that Mac users were using the ones I already mentioned. The author of the theme, Nik Iliadis, has done excellent work in developing this design, but he has not been able (or chose not to try) to make it more compatibile with IE. Of course that doesn’t bother me, but if those of you who are reading my blog cannot load it well, then let me know. I might go back to another design if I have to, but I really like this one because I can use my own pictures as the background. All the input is appreciated. [...]

Well, right now only four stars, since it could just be that I haven’t figured it out yet. It is beautiful, which is why I am hoping that I can solve the problem I am posting here. I have looked over the other comments, and I see no one has this same problem. But, I am wondering, before I selected this theme, there was a link for log in (as admin or other.) But, this link to log in disappeared after I installed the theme. Can anyone respond to this? How can a user log in?
Comment by therese — October 2, 17:47
Umm, how do you change the default background? I dont’ want users first logging on and being greeted with the really ugly wood tile
Comment by Wisedude — October 3, 1:17
Well, well, well… I got to admit this theme is a devil in disguise. For the standard Mc’Blogger who starts out with posting just text (or continues for that matter) this theme is visually pleasing and fine to use. But.. and this is a huge mother of a but… if you try to use even the most general plugin that affects or needs some flexibilty in template size then you’re boogered.
I’ve hacked it about, more than I normally would for a theme to get the odd things to work, but then as soon as I try another plugin, this won’t work, or that won’t fit.
If as much time and effort had been put into making this theme actually work as went into making it look nice, then it really would be a first class theme. At most it’s a novelty, a chocolate icecream that as soon as you start licking it falls in your lap.
If you are going to use any plugins in your site, steer away from this theme as it just creates more work and problems. If you are a standard blogger who wants a nice looking standard site then you should be fine.
This should contain a warning to Bloggers that plugins will need work, a lot of work. Judging by the responses from the author here, it doesn’t seem he’s that bothered about supporting anything. Even if a list of supported popular plugins were listed it would help, as a list of the unsupported or un-pluginable would be rather long.
Great looking theme, but it will bite you in the 4$$ if you try to mess with it.
~ Peace ~
