  1. Hey guys,

This is my first Wordpress theme. I’m sure there’s probably quite a few problems with it as I’m still getting used to the Wordpress template system. Hopefully it’s still useable as a theme though!

    Thanks :)

  2. I have to say this theme really caught my eye. So often somebody posts a link to an interesting article that happens to be in a blog. I usually just read that article and leave. This theme for reasons I can’t explain invites me to stay and read more than the initial article. Maybe its the colours or maybe its the layout..I don’t know forsure…but what I do know is that it works. Well done!

I don’t understand the whole WP need to be so slender and not use all of the width available on the screen.. thanks for utilizing the width!

  7. viclife: Not sure what the problem might be, but try deleting/moving the currently active skin, and then check your Wordpress install and it should default to Kubrik. Then just move or copy it back to the themes folder and reselect it. Hopefully that should work.

  8. Hi John,

I really love this template. You can see mine in action at http://www.spaparazzi.com

However I have a couple of issues. I am sure if you look at my source code you could figure this out easily enough.

As you can see the LEFT Sidebar (in blue) is extending ABOVE the navigation area and should be level like the RIGHT sidebar displays. I am pulling my hair out of course because its just not happening.

Also my DOC type in the source code has a blank space above it. I am not sure what is going on. The only time I don’t see it in the source is if I click on the actual post title hyperlinked from the post itself (in the middle)

I had to change my DOC type to Transitional due to the fact that I needed to use certain attributes such as TARGET-_blank, but even when I had it set to strict this still occured. I have removed plug-ins,checked for white space above and below all of my files for the template and nothing there.

Concerned as I am reading if this blank area appers that is messes you up big time with being listed in the search engines.

The other issue is the slowness I am experiencing with loading this template and my host infatically states, it’s not them. I have been all over the WP support site and getting nowhere with this.

HELP! I really don’t want to re-install this……just need to be able to fix these few issues.

I’ll be honest though, I am not a php expert, so thought I better tell you this upfront!

    Comment by Brenda — January 23, 22:20

  9. OK I seemed to have fixed the LEFT Sidebar (in blue) which was extending ABOVE the navigation area, so now its level with the RIGHT sidebar displayed…(think the image I used was too short lengthwise actually.)

But I have a BIGGER problem now.

When I MINIMIZE the screen it makes my sidebars move into the middle… UGH! Can anyone tell me why this might be happening or see the code I have altered in a way that would have done this?

I have not ever minimized this page until just now so who knows when this may have started!

    HELP!

    Comment by Brenda — January 24, 0:33

  10. The funny thing is it only does this on my HOME page.

If you navigate to the recent POSTS or ABOUT US…. and minimize, the screen its normal.

    Whats up with this??? ;o(

    Comment by Brenda — January 24, 1:35

  11. Well I changed the colors of the sidebars but as you can see, before it loads all the way, the LEFT SIDE extends all the way to the top of the screen, its just that our banner logo is covering it now.

Please I would really like to know why this is and what I need to do to correct it.

I don’t remember changing any parameters.

  12. IN regards to this problem mentioned above:

“Also my DOC type in the source code has a blank space above it. I am not sure what is going on. The only time I don’t see it in the source is if I click on the actual post title hyperlinked from the post itself (in the middle)”

    I recieved this reply elsewhere:

“Actually it does not refer to the top of your page (in source code speak, so to say). The stylesheet is putting that breadcrumb at the top of your page more than likely. What I am referring to is where in your system is the actual doctype declaration being printed out? Is it in a function somewhere? Search through your source code to find ‘DOCTYPE’ and see.”

OK that sounds good I am just not sure what to do about it. If someone could respond as I am not very php savvy.

If these are in the wrong place or a couple of those mentioned should NOT be there at all, could this have to do with my constant cannot connect to server issues I am having with WP or my host????

Because otherwise I am still grasping here for straws.

This is a brand new install, only been up a week.

    Comment by Brenda — January 25, 5:46

  14. Hi Brenda,

Gimme a little while to go through your questions and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

    ***********

”before it loads all the way, the LEFT SIDE extends all the way to the top of the screen, its just that our banner logo is covering it now.”

This is the way the page renders so it’ll display the column images to the left and right (while keeping the fluid/liquid layout). It would be possible to start the left column background after the header image, but it would require extra divs, and I usually try to avoid using too many divs as the code can end up a huge mess. Not sure if that makes sense, but hopefully it did! I always feel dirty when I add extra divs to fix any issues, so I avoid it all costs usually. If you want that bit fixed, I’ll see if there are any work arounds that don’t require extra divs (I don’t have the templates here at the moment to double check).

    ***********

“Also my DOC type in the source code has a blank space above it. I am not sure what is going on. The only time I don’t see it in the source is if I click on the actual post title hyperlinked from the post itself (in the middle)”

This could be occurring in a couple places. Check that there isn’t an extra line at the top of either index.php (before the ), or header.php (before ).

What browser are you using when you notice the minimise problem? I don’t have access to my work computer at the moment, but I’ll check that out and get back to you. I do remember there was an issue with IE5/6 that would move the columns around if the browser window was resized to less than about 600 wide, but I thought I fixed that. I’ll double check that over the weekend.

BTW I love what you’ve done to the template!

    Thanks :)

    John

  15. Hi John,

Thanks for checking in. I know its pretty amazing when we customize these templates to fit our own business, how different they end up looking!

OK, the sidebars displaying in the middle has been resolved, thank goodness. But I sure need your help on another level. ;0)

My header image is rather large as you can see, going across. I renamed it as the page_header.jpg, replacing the one that came in the original template.

Image size is about 32.7KB as compressed.
The header banner is 1250 x 166 pixels

I felt it needed to be that wide because if I shortened it across, the repeat comes up, to where the hyperlinked TITLE is appearing over the darker part of the image banner itself, making it very difficult to read.

Also, in a 17″ browser it looks fine, BUT when I look at a 15″ browser it doesn’t display the entire header. It cuts it off on the LEFT side about 2 inches. Ugh!

    Any way around this?

Is there a code modification that would allow the image to automatically adjust to the width of anyones monitor, so this doesn’t happen?

Forgive me but I am again not php code savvy at all! LOL

  17. Hey, loving this theme, I modified it for a friend, but I do seem to be having the issue where if IE5/6 is used and the window width is less than 600, people can’t read a darn thing, especially on the comments pages.

Any suggestions? Normally I wouldn’t be too concerned (hello, upgrade to IE7, people! hehe), but the girl has several regular readers who all seem to have this problem.

    Comment by Kate — January 28, 22:53

  1. Hi I am having an issue with the drop down menu under my Featured Expert area in the navigation not appearing.

I was told by my programmer to contact you about the folllowing issue. Here are his comments:

“The problem here is that Microsoft ignored some CSS standards when they designed IE6. Many web designers worked around those problems and coded things specifically for IE6. Whoever designed your theme (or plugin? I’m not sure which is generating those drop down menus) did not code it for IE6. They either believed in sticking to standards or knew that IE7 would fix the problem.

The best bet for fixing this would be to contact the author of the theme or plugin and ask if they have a workaround for IE6. You definitely don’t want to mess with a solution found anywhere else, unless it’s specific to the theme or plugin you are using. Those kind of solutions work if implemented by a knowledgeable designer, but it’s not a good idea for a casual user to try to implement. Anything you did would also disappear if you upgraded the theme/plugin later.”

So as you can see I really need your help on this.

  2. I love love LOVE this theme. The only change I made was to make multiple headers that load up each time the page is viewed - I think I have 10 or 12 header images rotating in and out (including the original tulip).

I was looking for a theme with that “something” and this most definitely fits the bill!

    —————–

You can use percentages with images, but i wouldn’t recommend it as it can look terrible. Your best bet is to make it seamless aligned left or right depending on where the header text is (in your case right).

Hi I am having an issue with the drop down menu under my Featured Expert area in the navigation not appearing.
    —————–

There’s a few lines of javascript you can use to enable drop downs in ie5/6. I didn’t include it in the original versions of the themes as I didn’t think many people would really use it, but if you download the latest theme, you’ll see a tulip.js file. all you need to do is copy that file to your skin’s directory, and then add the script code to the header.php file. You’ll see an example of this in the newer header.php file.

    —————–

This is a huge problem with IE5/6, and as far as I know, without javascript or css hacks, there’s not really a great deal that can be done about it. I’ve always tried to avoid any css hacks, as you can’t guarantee it’ll work with future browsers (check out what happened to a lot of designs when ie7 appeared). I’ll take a look and see if I can make it work a little better with the next theme revision.

Sorry for the delayed responses, been crazy busy lately, but will fix up a couple of the issues people are experiences (especially with ie5/6).

  5. HI
    You suggested…..

“Your best bet is to make it seamless aligned left or right depending on where the header text is (in your case right).”

Ok I am not understanding how to put this into effect? Do I do this in the CSS file or header? Do you have the exact code I need to change and if you could be more specific it would really help. Not very PHP savvy..

Also I am using Tulip_Time 5. Is it not the current version?
You mentioned a tulip.js…I found it once I downloaded the new one, but needed to make sure what path I sent that to.

    Do I upload it to /public_html/wp-content/themes/tulip-time-05/ ???

Again of you could also specify exactly where I insert this in the header file, as weIll as the other, I’d appreciate it. :0)
