We’ve been working very hard on a new Subversion-backed database for themes that will allow you to upload themes as you did before, as a plain ZIP file, and we’re transparently check it into SVN so changes can be tracked just like we do for WordPress development.

There will also be moderation and review so that we can scan themes for XSS problems, malicious code, spam links, and other ways that people have been distributing malware themes. I’m sorry this has taken longer than I thought it would, but the problems involved with doing things “right” are non-trivial. Most importantly we want to ensure that once the re-launch is done you’ll have easy, fast, and stable access to the best and brightest in the theme world, and you’ll never have to think twice about the code you’re downloading.

Sorry it took a bit, it wasn’t native functionality in WordPress but we developed a set of functions around the new taxonomy system that allows that sort of search and filtering for ALL WordPress blogs, and those improvements will be included in the upcoming 2.3 release. Next up we’re tackling bringing uploads and updates back.

Last month in a conversation with Thomas he said that he wished the theme viewer worked more like the new plugins system on WordPresss.org, but he didn’t have as much time to devote to the project anymore and asked if I could find a new maintainer. Thomas and the other volunteers here deserve a round of applause for all the work they’ve put in.

Well I’m happy to announce that work on Version 3.0 of the Theme Viewer has begun, and to kick it off I thought it would be important to identify some of the current problems with the theme viewer before moving on.

Site Problems

  • The site is excruciatingly slow.
  • Filtering and searching can be clunky or hard.
  • Comments (and ratings) may apply to an old or new version of the theme.
  • It’s difficult for theme authors to respond to comments or to have a conversation.

Theme Quality Problems

  • Security problems, particularly XSS, but also backdoors and SQL injection.
  • Compatibility with newer versions of WordPress.
  • Some themes are encoding, making it difficult or impossible to modify them.
  • Hard-coded graphics with no source files, making it difficult to customize.
  • Browser compatibility.

Abuse and Ethical Problems

  • There is overwhelming evidence that both the rating and download system are being gamed.
  • Some themes are rip-offs.
  • Some themes embed links to spam sites, which will cause blogs that use them to be penalized in Google.

Some of these problems are really hard to solve, and there aren’t always clear lines, but if the goal of the Theme Viewer is to have the highest quality collection of free WordPress themes (with no surprises) then these are all things we’re going to have to address to some degree in the coming months.

One immediate improvement you may note is now on every theme page there is a “report” button where you can report a problem with spam, copyright, or anything else. I’m also looking to pay someone at least part-time to help with the day-to-day community and quality maintenance. I’m sure I missed a few things here, what do you think are the biggest issues the site needs to address?

Update: We’ve got the site infinitely faster, using both code improvements and Akamai, but there is an issue with searching that we’re looking into and hope to have fixed soon.
